One of the most important positions on your youth football team is the quarterback. In order for the rest of the team to do their job and get the ball in the end zone, the quarterback needs to be able to get the ball in their hands. Passing is almost like an art form that requires a lot of practice and effort in order to master. It is important that you work closely with all of the players on your team, but you may need to spend some additional time here and there to help your quarterback develop his arm.
Coaching a youth football quarterback begins with teaching the proper grip for throwing that perfect spiral pass. One of the most common errors that quarterbacks make is placing the palm of their hand against the football. Only the fingertips should be on the ball in a very light grip. The light grip will enable the quarterback to have better control over the ball so that they throw more accurately. While this is an ideal holding position, it can be quite difficult for those players with larger hands. You also want to make sure that the first or index finger is on the seam of the football. This is what produces the spin when the ball is being released during the pass.
Another awesome benefit your children will take away from playing youth football is confidence. Children need to have their confidence boosted so that they do not wilt under the pressure of new and difficult challenges, which they are sure to face in every stage of life. When a coach takes the time to help a child learn a new skill and perfect it, that helps the child see that they do in fact have what it takes to overcome the challenges of life and that with time and practice they can conquer just about anything.
Finally, playing in youth football leagues also helps children who are passionate about the sport learn the basics and fundamentals they need to know to play the game better. Many of the kids who start playing football at early ages end up playing in high school and college. Playing in youth sports can help them develop skills that they will perfect in those later years and help them achieve a much higher level of success at the high school or possibly even the college level.
